USS Kearsarge vs. CSS Alabama

The Portsmouth Athenaeum library in downtown Portsmouth NH presents an exhibit, May 6- Sep 15, 2011:  “Fire on the Water: Portsmouth's Kearsarge Sinks the Deadly Confederate Raider

Alabama ."

The Kearsarge was the Portsmouth Navy Yard-built Union vessel famous for defeating the CSS Alabama -- which had sunk more Union ships and mercantile vessels than any other Confederate raider -- in a battle off Cherbourg, France. The Kearsarge victory came at a pivotal point in the relationship between the Union and European powers who were leaning towards support of the Confederacy or mediation that supported separation.
